Housed in a neoclassical building of the 19th century at the foothills of the Acropolis, the Paul and Alexandra Kanellopoulos Museum hosts one of the largest private collections of antiquities in Greece, with more than 6,000 objects and works of art dating from prehistoric to modern times. The rich private collection of the couple Kanellopoulos was donated to the Greek state in 1972 and the operation of the museum officially launched in July 1976, in a building ceded by the Ministry of Culture. Funded by Alexandra Kanellopoulos, the museum acquired a new hall and was updated, aiming to better promote the exhibits and to highlight the wealth of Greek art through the ages. In the new hall, visitors have the opportunity to admire artefacts from prehistoric to Roman times and the remains of a medieval house located right next to Rizokastro, part of the fortification wall of the Acropolis in the 13th AD century. In the old building you can see the collections from early to the post-Byzantine era, as well as exhibits of modern times. Working hours: Tuesday-Sunday 08: 00-15: 00, Monday closed. Tickets: Full: €4, Reduced: €2
