It presents the art and culture of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine times, rightfully occupying a place among the most important museums of the world. Its exhibits include more than 25,000 objects, dating from the 3rd AD up to the 20th century and originating mainly from Greece, Asia Minor and the Balkans. Specifically, the collections include paintings, sculptures, ornaments, manuscripts, photographs, ceramics, mosaics, engravings, mosaics, utensils etc. The Byzantine and Christian Museum is housed in the impressive Villa Ilisia, namely the winter palace of the famous Duchess of Plakentia. The complex of buildings, a fine example of 19th century architecture, was built according to the designs of the famous Greek architect Stamatis Kleanthis. After the death of the Duchess, the buildings were received by the Greek public and in 1926 they were granted for the housing of the Byzantine and Christian Museum. Its operation formally started in 1930.
